Hedley Goshawk - The village barber. Hedley's nephew remembers,
", Hedley Goshawk, cutting someone's hair in his Stradbroke Barber's shop circa 1960 I guess. It looks as if it may well have been a photo taken for publication in a newspaper, perhaps. The Barbers shop was the front room of his house in Church Street next to what was then the Fire Station. Hedley was not only the barber, but also the Baptist minister at Occold. He was a Stradbroke 'legend' in the 50s / 60s / 70s. He was on the parish council and a keen bowler. The shop was very much a meeting place for the men of the village - whether or not they needed a haircut. When we were kids my brother and I used to take our Snakes and Ladders or Ludo to the shop and play it with the customers - Freddie and Eddie Copping and 'Ginger' Calver in particular. Auntie Grace used to bring cups of tea through from the house for Hedley and he was notorious for following customers to the door with his scissors still having a little snip at their hair even after they'd put their coat on."
